6 steps to achieve your health goals in 2017

Changing is never easy, but it may come naturally if you start changing the belief and the desire you have for yourself! In 2017, may you care more about wellness, your body, mind, and spirit. Give yourself time to create new habits and a new lifestyle. There are some steps that you can follow to make it easy.

Ask yourself: “why do you want to change at this time?”

If the answer convinces you, you are probably ready for a change. However, if you are not sure, you may need to rethink. Otherwise, you will never have the motivation you need to achieve your goals. Do you need a strong reason? Of course, everybody wants to be healthy! But why do you want to change now? If someone told you to change, it is unlikely that you will be successful. Decide for yourself. Do you want to change to become a healthier role model for our children? Do you want to change to fit in that old jeans? The reason is all yours, but it is must be a good one.

Set small goals

A goal is a dream with a plan and a deadline! Start small, but start with a plan. Start reducing the quantity of foods that you know is not healthy. Increase the time or frequency you do exercises. Choose a deadline, and work hard to get there. Being specific implies a commitment to your goal. Step by step you can change your habits and lifestyle.

Be SMART

SMARTSMART means:

Specific – I will reduce a tsp of sugar per day; I will lose 4 kilos per month; I will cut out processed foods;
Measurable – I will keep track of my sugar intake until I take less than 25g a day;
Attainable – Is the goal attainable for me? Why?
Realistic – Is the goal realistic for me?
Timely – when are you going to start and when do you want to achieve your goal?

Always consider your routine, your health, and any limitation you may have.

Keep yourself motivated

Motivation and commitment must be part of your routine to accomplish your goal. It is not easy to be motivated every day. You will get tired, frustrated with something at home or at work and feel like giving up. But then you must be committed to your goal. Remind yourself that you have decided to change for something bigger than any struggle you are facing. Think about how the benefits you will receive when you incorporate this change into your life.

Find support

Together we are stronger! Find someone that can support you. If your challenge is learning how to live gluten-free, look for a coeliac support group. If you need to cut out sugar, alcohol, then find someone who understands your struggle and can offer you some help. Find inspiration to achieve your goals.

Reward yourself

Every time you achieve a small goal, celebrate it with something that makes you happy – something other than food! Buy yourself a gift, maybe that cloth that you feel great in. Take half an hour to do absolutely anything you want – you may sleep in till noon, and refuse to feel guilty about it. Be happy! You will get there.
